Beautiful, passionate and a woman of the world are just a few ways to describe Miss World 2018, Brinique Gibson; one of the most regal queens I’ve met. I was lucky enough to snag a moment with this booked and busy beauty and to date, it’s one of my favorite interviews yet.
Pageant Diaries (PD): Most people typically ask, what was the inspiration behind entering a pageant- but did you think from the onset of entering that you had a chance to win?
Brinique Gibson ( BG): I was inspired to enter the competition due to the fact that I had a definite belief in myself, wholeheartedly. From a teenager I’ve honestly felt as if I embodied the characteristics a beauty queen possessed. I found it quite ironic that over the years random people would approach me on numerous occasions and would refer to me as Miss Bahamas not knowing that secretly that was a future goal of mine.
PD: From the start of preliminaries to final night locally, what kept you motivated?
BG: I always had a high level of confidence leading up to the main event, however some of that diminished slightly during my preparation of the competition. So self-motivation was something that I had to rediscover. Family and friends assisted tremendously with encouraging me to move forward which I greatly appreciated and put into action. But I knew that my desire to enter and be victorious had to come from deep within. And with that in mind, I pressed on to achieve this long awaited personal dream.
PD: The Miss Bahamas Organization is definitely an elite group, filled with the most locally legendary public figures, what’s your experiences being a part of the Miss Bahamas Organization family?
BG: In one word amazing. The day after I won , the committee invited me to brunch and welcomed me into the family. Since then, they’ve been extremely helpful in me maintaining what I’ve worked so hard to achieve. Working so closely together, preparing for the international competition allowed us to get to know each other a little bit better which was an extra bonus for any person in my position to have. I’ve had so many great memories such as traveling with Jerome and Antoin, diving into a bowl of Michelle’s delicious black bean soup , having dinner at Shawn’s , and calling Juliette, Loleta , Sadye and Leslia at my leisure to chat and help me to remain focused. The relationships I’ve garnered with each of them will be something I’ll carry with me for a very long time.
PD: I’d love for you to share with the pageant diaries readers what the journey was like preparing for internationals and what about the Miss World Pageant was your biggest takeaway?
BG:My journey was one my family and I will never ever be able to forget. The food, the culture and the entire experience were all filled with a multitude of emotions. From me almost getting lost in the various airports, to me having to learn to sleep comfortable in moving vehicles, these were the little things that I now look back and smile at. But meeting the other young ladies who were representing their countries probably stood out the most. They were very courteous to me and some of the bonds that were created I believe will last a lifetime. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and wouldn’t trade one moment of it.
PD: Taking a look back at your incredible reign as it comes to an end, if there was one thing you could do over again what would it be?
BG: In retrospect I think that I would’ve slowed down a bit and enjoyed more of what the title afforded me. Twelve ( 12) months is long, but at the same time it’s extremely short. I wish I could have made my platform more national because it wasn’t just something that was mandatory as a part of my reign, but it was something I truly believed in. Now that my time as Miss World Bahamas is rapidly winding down, I’ve decided to take the initiative to do whatever it takes to ensure that my Eatwise Exercise Stay Alive program will live on long after I’ve relinquished my crown.
PD: This is totally a cheeky question, but I just HAD to ask, do you have any favourites out of the 2019 contestants vying for the crown?
BG: I wish every contestant the best of luck in the upcoming competition. I’ve had the pleasure to attend the preliminaries and noticed that each contestant has something distinctive to add to the Miss World Bahamas legacy. To have a definite choice for a winner? The judges have a tough decision ahead of them. Personally, there are #Shhhhh
PD: The contestants this year are certainly battling it out and the winner will be truly deserving. But as us pageant fans know, once the crown is won, the work is only just begun. Do you have pearls of wisdom you would like to share with the incoming queen?
BG: Work hard, be authentic and believe with all your heart that anything is possible. This crown can take you to incredible heights, if you have the right mindset and it’s up to the new Queen to find her niche to make herself stand out. Be a true leader and learn what it truly means to be an ambassador, it’ll help your reign run smoothly.
As we wish Brinique farewell as Miss World Bahamas 2018, as a woman of substance, class, brains and beauty we know that her legacy will never be forgotten. Thank you for beautifully representing the Bahamas, Brinique!
